Lucknow Super Giants Team Players List 2023: Captain, Names, Retained Players
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) is one of the two new cricket teams to take part in the IPL starting from season 15. It is owned by Sanjeev Goenka’s RPSG Group and is based in Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. The rookies entered the playoffs in their debut season without much trouble but failed to win an elimination match.
LSG Preview 2023

LSG overcame the qualifying phase of IPL 2022 but were defeated by Royal Challengers Bangalore in the elimination match. It has been a great campaign that has earned the team an army of thousands of fans. Its backbone is made up of brilliant players:
- Krunal Pandya;
- Quinton de Kock;
- Deepak Hooda;
- KL Rahul;
- Marcus Stoinis.
Backed by Mark Wood, they will be able to ensure Lucknow Super Giants top spot in the IPL season 16. Also, don’t discount the exciting duo of Avesh Khan and Mohsin Khan, who will surely be back in action, and first-class bowler Ravi Bishnoi, nominated for the Emerging Player award in the IPL 2020.
To be fair, LSG has a few weaknesses. Firstly, they are in vital need of a backup pacer who can offload Mark Wood. And secondly, the team needs a foreign middle-order batsman.
About LSG
The Governing Council of the Indian Premier League has issued a tender for the formation of two new teams in late summer 2021. Twenty-two companies have expressed their desire to get the right to run the franchise in Lucknow. The very high cost of the teams deterred most of the bidders, with only 6 of them submitting bids. RPSG Group, owned by Sanjiv Goenk, won the bidding by buying LSG for ₹7,090 crores.
In January 2022, the management released the official name of the newly minted team – Lucknow Super Giants. On the eve of the IPL 2022 auction, KL Rahul was selected as the captain, becoming the highest paid cricketer in the league.

Lucknow Super Giants Captain

Last season’s captain was Kannanur Lokesh Rahul, who did a fine job of ensuring that the team made the playoffs. He is one of the best batsmen in international cricket, who successfully hits the ball from anywhere on the court without slowing down the pace of the game. Rahul has scored five hundred runs in the last 5 seasons, so he is rightly regarded as a key player with the bat in LSG.
KL Rahul made his international debut in 2014. He became the first Indian to score a century in his first One Day International match. The right-handed batsman is doing well as a wicketkeeper, which is a definite plus for the team. He scored a total of 616 in 15 games last IPL season.
LSG Squad 2023

Lucknow Super Giants took part in the IPL 2023 auction to strengthen the middle echelon, which clearly lacks speed and agility. Ahead of the new season, they have brought in excellent players – Nicholas Pooran, Amit Mishra, Jaydev Unadkat – who are sure to boost the team’s chances of reaching the semi-finals and finals of the competition.
Released Players
IPL 2023 will be the second season for LSG. And they intend not just to beat most of their rivals but to win the major trophy of the tournament. In this regard, the team had to bid farewell to seven players who had underperformed last year:
- Dushmantha Chameera;
- Andrew Tye;
- Manish Pandey;
- Jason Holder;
- Shahbaz Nadeem;
- Ankit Rajpoot;
- Evin Lewis.
Retained Players
LSG managed to finish 4th in the standings last season, which is an excellent result for a newcomer to the IPL. Andy Flower is pleased with the performance of most of the players involved last season. Therefore, 88% of the squad remains the same:

IPL Team History

The Lucknow Super Giants team has done well in its first IPL season, finishing third in the points table. It won 9 out of 15 matches, beating Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
In the opening contest, LSG could not play at their home stadium due to another COVID-19 outbreak. Consequently, all the matches of the qualifying phase were played at Maharashtra. But in September last year, the BCCI confirmed the return of IPL, so the team’s qualifying games are expected to be played at BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium.
Statistics and Facts about LSG in the IPL Tournament
LSG has bought many versatile players in the auction held in February 2022. It recruited famous foreign cricketers like Marcus Stoinis, Mark Wood, Quinton de Kock and Krunal Pandya. A little later, KL Rahul was appointed captain of the team and Andy Flower became the head coach.
Before the start of the 15th IPL season, Mark Wood was unable to play due to injury, so Andrew Tye took his place. Lucknow Super Giants were able to climb up to third place in the standings during the qualifying phase. But after reaching the play-offs, they lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore, finishing 4th overall.
